Akamatsu is Awesome

Normally when an author recycles things from an older story of theirs into a newer one, it sucks.  But Akamatsu Ken seems to be able to make it awesome.

Spoilers herein for Negima chapter 303, and also possibly Love Hina (if anyone can still be spoiled on that).  So if you're behind on Negima (and intend to catch up), you may not want to read this post.  I'll add a jump break here for convenience.

Akamatsu has put some stuff from Love Hina into Negima, mostly the similar character designs, but the Shinmeiryuu school and its techniques carry over directly.  In Love Hina, the Shinmeiryuu swordswoman is Motoko, and in Negima, it's Setsuna.  At this point I believe Setsuna is more powerful than Motoko, though I've only seen the Love Hina anime, and the manga continues on past where the anime ends, so maybe Motoko gets stronger.

Anyway, after seeing a while back that Negi in Magia Erebia form could be harmed directly by Zanmaken Ni No Tachi, I'd been wondering if we'd ever see the technique used again.  From events in chapter 303, it looks like we might be seeing it happen pretty soon.  Setsuna is fighting with Tsukuyomi when Tsukuyomi pulls out a strange sword...

The bells immediately went off in my head.  "Love Hina reference!" I said.  But then, what I was thinking about wasn't actually the sword.  It was a different object, from episode 17 where Motoko has to master Zanmaken Ni No Tachi to save Naru.  The sword is in fact in Love Hina, though. It's in episode 25, where once again Motoko has to use Zanmaken Ni No Tachi to save Naru.  The sword's power is shown, and its legend is told there...

So if we flip to the very next page of chapter 303, what do we see?

It's the same sword, with the same power and the same legend.  If Tsukuyomi is using that sword, Setsuna's definitely going to have to use Zanmaken Ni No Tachi to defeat her.  The only question: does she know it?  I personally think she does, though she may fight with Tsukuyomi for a while before realizing she needs to use it.

Now if only the American release would catch up.  I have every volume available in the US right now (which at last count is 26)...

Side point: I don't know why Setsuna's still wearing the nekomimi maid outfit, but I'm not going to complain.
